2/Mx Regt, South Africa,

2nd December 1899.
Reveille sounded at 3 Am, fell in about 3.45Am and proceded to Woolwick Dockyard station entrained for Southampton, where we arrived at about 5 A.m we were told off in messes and embarked on board the S S Avondale Castle steamed out of Southampton water at 4 P.m enroute for S. Africa.

3rd to 26th December
on board the Avondale Castle everyone in the best of spirits we had two concerts every week which we could not finish as there was

always a long programme to get through, one man died on the way out.

26th December.
Arrived at Capetown. Transhipped on board the Mongolian steamer out of Cape Town Harbour same afternoon enroute for Durban. On board the Mongolian a proper stinking old tub the rations quite as bad as the boat I reckon both had attained a great age.

1st of January
Arrived at Durban everyone very pleased to get there, entrained for Estcourt in the afternoon in open cattle trucks in which we spent the remainder of the day also the night.

2nd January
Still in the trucks got to P.M Burg about 8 A.m where we had
